So I got a whole lot of fabric samples of purple taffetas.
The 3 in the middle all ended up being too dark for my tastes. They match the dark purples of the portrait, but I think are too dark for the whole dress. The lavender taffeta is pretty enough, but zomg snoooozefest. It’s like a bridesmaid dress took a nap.
I love the faille! Love love love! The ribs in the silk give it a two-toned effect similar to the portrait! But at $30 per yard it was a bit more than I wanted to spend when it’s my first time doing this era. $30/yard is strictly for second attempts when I know what I’m doing.
So dun dun dun, I bought none of them, and got the purple mini-striped silk from Renaissance Fabrics.
Obviously the dress portrait isn’t showing a stripe, but I thought the two colors of purple stripes evoked the feeling of the portrait well enough. And now I can do a bias ruffle with fun stripey diagonals!
I also bought a bunch of organdy to use for a corded petticoat and possibly a flounced petticoat as well. I’ve never used it before, but dang that stuff feels like paper. Should give the petticoats great body.
Thanks all for playing along with my fabric shenanigans!
Ohh. Very nice fabric choice and a bit unexpected, too. Those diagonal ruffles are going to be spectacular!
Thanks! I’m actually surprised I haven’t worked with stripes before, so this should be fun (and I’ll have to figure out pattern matching).
That surprises me too. 😉 But then pattern matching is also a great skill to master. 🙂 I hope you’ll have much fun with this project.
